Netflix’s The Witcher was filmed in a creepy haunted castle which you can visit

Netflix ‘s highly-anticipated new series The Witcher has finally landed, and it’s already giving us major travel inspiration.

The eight-episode series is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and stars Henry Cavill as monster slayer Geralt of Rivia.

The series was filmed on location across a host of breathtaking sites in Europe, but one that has particularly caught our attention is the Ogrodzieniec Castle in Poland.

The ruins of the 14th century medieval castle were used as a backdrop for scenes starring Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz of Roggeveen and Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold.

Although producers have remained tight-lipped about exactly what happens in the scenes (to avoid spoilers), some fans have speculated that it could be serving as a training ground for the mages.

Ogrodzieniec Castle

It’s not difficult to see why the castle proved a hit with the crew.

For a start, located just 40km from Krakow it can be easy to reach, while its mountainous surroundings make for quite the sweeping landscape.

In fact, Ogrodzieniec Castle was chosen because it made for a fantasy-worthy setting without the need for too much CGI.

Locals believe that the castle is haunted

The historic landmark boasts a fascinating history, having served as a home to several families before it was abandoned in 1810. It was only in World War II that the castle was nationalised and fully restored – and it fact, it didn’t open to visitors until 1973.

However, some locals believe that the castle itself is actually haunted by a large black dog, said to be the spirit of the castle’s former owner, the Castellan of Krakow, Stanisław Warszycki.

The castle was abandoned in the 1800s and only re-opened in WWII

Those brave enough can of course go and check out the castle for themselves.

Located in the region known as the Polish Jura, the easiest destination to travel to for Brits is Krakow, as it’s less than an hour away by car.
