The coyote runs away after the officer punches it, but it returns after other officers arrive at the scene late on Thursday evening.

More footage shows police surrounding the animal, as the bitten officer tries unsuccessfully to use pepper spray on the animal.

Responding officers then try unsuccessfully to use a stun gun on the coyote before shooting it, police said.

The Columbus police officer, who sustained a leg wound, was identified as 32-year veteran of the force Jim Tripp.

‘When the officer got out, the coyote literally came out of nowhere and attacked him, unprovoked,’ Sgt. James Fuqua told the Dispatch. ‘All he could do was punch it to defend himself.’

The officer was treated at the hospital and is expected to be fine. Police say the coyote is being tested for rabies and any other diseases.

Days later, a father in New Hampshire strangled a coyote to death with his bare hands after it grabbed his two-year-old son and pulled him to the ground.

Ian O’Reilly was walking a hiking trail in Exeter with his wife and three children on Monday around 11am when the animal got its teeth into the two-year-old’s coat.

The boy’s parents managed to separate him from the creature but O’Reilly said it wouldn’t leave when he attempted to shoo it away.

When the coyote bit the father’s chest and forearm in response to being kicked, O’Reilly felt he had no choice but to fight to kill.
