The Duke of Edinburgh was pictured being driven to see the Queen earlier today by Princess Anne. Philip looked in good spirits, smiling as the pair drove through the Sandringham estate. It has been a busy and at times chaotic few months for the Duke.
Last year Philip gave up driving voluntarily after causing a car crash near Sandringham.
The Duke’s Land Rover landed on its side after a collision with another car.
He escaped any injury but Emma Fairweather, a passenger in the other car, broke her wrist.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “After careful consideration the Duke of Edinburgh has taken the decision to voluntarily surrender his driving licence.”
He wrote to Ms Fairweather acknowledging the “very distressing experience”.
Philip added: “I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident.”
His journey with Anne is the first time he has been seen in public since Christmas Eve, when he was released from London’s King Edward VII Hospital.
He was admitted on December 20 for “observation and treatment” related to a pre-existing condition.
In the lead up to Christmas, another royal insider told Express.co.uk: “Prince Philip has not been very well recently.”
A source revealed to The Sun he had suffered a health “wobble” in Autumn.
They said: “A few weeks ago Philip had a bit of a wobble and hasn’t felt so energetic.
“He has been living quietly at Sandringham, where he spends most of his time reading and pottering about.
“Until recently, he has been very active — carriage riding, fishing at Balmoral and driving around royal estates — although he no longer drives on public roads following his crash in January.”
The ageing Duke of Edinburgh is said to enjoy his retirement at Wood Farm on the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
Before his hospital trip, Philip had not been seen out in public since last May.
He joined the Queen and the rest of his family at Lady Gabriella Windsor’s royal wedding.
Philip seemed in good spirits at the family event and was captured chuckling with Prince Harry.
His latest reunion with Her Majesty comes after the Queen was forced to pull out of an event because of a cold.
The Queen had to cancel her Women’s Institute meeting on Thursday at West Newton Village hall, which she attends every year.
