Over the past year, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been steadfast in their attempt to maintain a wall of privacy. The couple decided not to follow royal tradition when it came to the birth of their first son, baby Archie, as they opted for a home birth and kept details of his christening under wraps. The Sussexes then decided not to give the newborn a royal title, choosing to name him Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, as they said they want the child to be raised as a private citizen.
Now, Meghan and Harry have decided to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and split their time between the UK and North America.
But royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams has warned they will never be able to achieve the “ideal privacy” levels that they may seek.
He said: “The press will continue to be fascinated by every single thing they do throughout their lives.
“I don’t think it is going to be possible to have the ideal privacy that they would wish in an ideal world.”
Mr Fitzwilliams added that even if the couple decide to quit from the Royal Family completely, they will still not be able to shield themselves from the spotlight.
The expert predicted that their bombshell announcement, shared on their Instagram account sussexroyal last week, could be a prerequisite to the pair quitting the Royal Family altogether.
He said: “Stepping back may well be a prelude to stepping down.
“It may well be the start of them cutting themselves adrift because they are unhappy and stressed with royal life.”
Mr Fitzwilliams added: “It does look as though this is probably the beginning of the end.”
But he conceded “anything could happen” and we will know more in the months and years that follow.
Meghan Markle is currently in Canada with baby Archie, having flown out shortly after the couple announced the unprecedented move to step down as senior royals.
On Thursday she was spotted driving herself to a Canadian airport to pick up her friend and pilates instructor Heather Dorak.
Meghan remained inside the car as she patiently waited for her friend to leave Victoria International Airport.
The Duchess seemed to be wearing a casual outfit, with a dark beanie hat and sunglasses to protect herself from the sunny weather.
Meghan didn’t head to the airport alone, but she was escorted by a male companion, believed to be a member of her security.
During the 10-minute wait in the car park, Meghan seemed in high spirits and was seen chatting to him.
While Meghan was 5,000 miles away from Meghan, waiting for her friend at the airpot, Prince Harry carried out his first royal engagement since they pair made the bombshell announcement.
He hosted the Rugby Football League 2021 draw at Buckingham Palace.
