Their move has sparked calls for the monarchy to be ended as the UK public turned on the soon-to-be ex-royals. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come under fire in recent weeks, with a huge row erupting over who exactly should fund their security. They recently announced they would be spending their time in the UK and North America following their resignation from senior Royal Family duties.
The Sussexes will formally stand down at the end of the month, but their decision to leave their son at home in Canada has been criticised.
The UK taxpayer is expected to foot the bill to protect them, as officers guarding them are from the Metropolitan Police.
It was confirmed last month that Canada would not longer foot the bill to protect the couple due to their “change in status”.
But their decision has caused many to attack the couple, urging for the monarchy to end.
One wrote: “One admits abandoning a child abroad at Canadian taxpayers may not be a favorable Commonwealth response?
“Other former `Empire nations’ may wonder whom of us may get milked next by none royals.”
Another wrote: “Archie is her bargaining chip.”
While a third responded: “When QE2 passes, the monarchy should end. Time to call it a day.”
“Next week will demonstrate the colossal challenges and sums involved when Harry and Meghan are in London needing security just as much as Archie.
“It’s as much as another £50,000 to what’s already being run up.
“But none of that will matter to senior royals who are despondent at not seeing the baby for so long.”
The couple have a team of around six royal protection officers, who cost the UK taxpayer £600,000.
