Authorities have evacuated the buildings close to East Croydon station due to the scare in the south London town and the area has been cordoned off. A spokesman for the Met Police has said: “Police were called at 8.46am on Thursday, February 6 to reports of a suspicious vehicle on Dingwall Road, Croydon. “Officers, including specialist officers, are on scene and cordons are in place.”
Commuters have taken to social media to express their shock at the incident, one Twitter user said: “Loads happening at east croydon station, it’s shut and all taped off and surrounding area closed. So scary.”
Another Twitter user said: “East Croydon station cordoned off and evacuated – overheard comments about a bomb alert. Be safe everyone!”
A commuter said on the social media site: “I got off at East Croydon to find police everywhere. Something about a suspicious package.”
National Rail have said that trains are not stopping at East Croydon statin because of the incident.
Thameslink tweeted: “Due to a security alert at a station at East Croydon trains will not be stopping at this station. Please use West Croydon for alternative options in to London.”
Steve Reed, MP for Croydon North, said on Twitter: “Arrived in Dingwall Road for the Develop Croydon event this morning to find the road closed off by police, no word about why, no one allowed in.”
A statement from National Rail said: “A security alert at East Croydon means trains are currently unable to stop at this station.
“Train services will run fast through East Croydon. This is expected to continue until approximately 11am.
“Check before you travel: You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner”.
“Compensation: You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.”
National Rail Kent and Sussex tweeted: “Police attending an incident near East Croydon station have asked us that we do not stop trains there for now. Trains will stop additionally at Selhurst and Norwood Jnc + ticket acceptance is being arranged. More as we have it.”
